Vienna, City of Music and Nostalgia

For those who think they've seen and done everything available, we'd like to offer something slightly different. A vacation in the timeless serenity of beautiful Vienna. A trip to Vienna is an absolute must for the hopeless romantic. Vienna artfully combines the excitement and youth of a modern, Western capital, while retaining a nostalgic Eastern flair, and does it as gracefully as a Vienna waltz.

Located in the eastern-most part of Austria, Vienna is seen as the gateway between West and East Europe. Divided into 23 districts, it is grouped in two sweeping circles around the historic Inner City. There are few cities which have experienced as much turmoil and history as Vienna. The modern city grew after the removal, in the late 1850's, of the ramparts guarding the inner city and the building of the 2.5 mile long Ringstrasse. Most of the city's main and most imposing buildings are lined along the Ringstrasse. They include the handsome Opera House; the Hofburg, the old imperial palace (another stands in formerly suburban Schoenbrunn); the neo-Gothic Rathaus (City Hall); the Greek-style Houses of Parliament; the Burgtheater (City Theatre); and the Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In the center of the city is the Cathedral of St. Stephen, Austria's finest Gothic church, built in the 14th and 15th centuries.

We'll start off with a city-tour covering most of these attractions. Our centrally located hotel will keep you right in the thick of things.

You'll have more than enough opportunity to feel the tradition and stateliness of this city in one of its more than 1,400 (!) coffee houses. Sit back and relax with a cup of rich Viennese coffee (not to be confused with Maxwell House!) and enjoy any of the hundreds of kinds of delicious regional cakes and pastries. You also have to try the world's best ice cream at the Tichl ice cream parlor. It would be difficult to imagine a more relaxing way to "visit" the city.

Vienna has always moved to a music all its own. It is an international city with a large cultural fare to offer its visitors. The opera and theater, in particular, tend to take on a larger-than-life dimension. The city is steeped in classical music and culture. It is the birthplace of Johann Strauss the Younger and the burial place of Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert.

What makes Vienna so utterly special, however, is the way that the old and the new intermingle and interact in such fine fashion. You'll be able to get plenty of advice from our travel escort (who knows the ins and outs of Vienna by heart). A trip to one of the numerous flea markets is also strongly advised. In addition to the interesting bargains that many European flea markets offer, the markets in Vienna offer many rarities from the past that will thrill any antique fan.

After our vacation in Vienna, you'll understand what Europeans have known all along....
