Skiing TourThe European Alps are Calling

For those of you who have never experienced the thrill of the Alps, we would like to give you the opportunity to vacation in the friendly confines of South Tyrol. We have a trip which will give you the best that the Alps have to offer.

We'll be staying in the medieval village of Sterzing, located approximately 6 miles from the Italian/Austrian border. Although it is geographically located in northern Italy, it's real soul is Austrian, from the language to the attitudes, traditions and architecture.

The skiing region in and around Sterzing - the Wipp valley - consists of several medium-sized areas at an altitude of 7,200 feet. In total, there are 30 ski lifts, 35 miles of ski runs and even our cross-country skiers will find many prepared runs.

The various ski areas are only a 10 - 15 minute drive from Sterzing and will be a challenge for all levels, from beginning to advanced. The Rosskopf, Sterzing's "home" mountain can be easily reached by foot. It's especially well-located for those of us who miss our morning bus, want to sleep in, or are still nursing a hangover from the night before. This sunny ski area has its own cable car, 6 ski lifts and seven runs.

In addition to usual recreational facilities such as indoor swimming pool and sauna, Sterzing also offers indoor tennis courts, a 5-mile-long toboggan run, and an ice-skating rink with disco. In the middle of the woods in Gossensass, there is a fantastic disco that we'll use for our Christmas parties. As a special highlight, our ski instructors will help us organize ski-run competitions, skiing tours and a torch-lit farewell run.

We will be staying in quiet guest houses in the heart of Sterzing, surrounded by old city walls and towers. According to the Tourist Board, these facades are the among the most beautiful in the whole region and stand second only to those found in Innsbruck. The inns are among the oldest buildings in Sterzing and still create an impressive medieval atmosphere.

As a special treat over the Christmas period, we have booked the Schoelzhorn inn and the neighboring Waldheim guest house. They are both situated by the Ratschings, the largest and probably most beautiful of the Wipp valley skiing areas. The "Schoelzhorn" is run by Berta, who is known throughout the area for her culinary skills. That's why even the people staying in the "Waldheim" go there to enjoy the excellent dinners. Both of these places offer rooms with 2 - 4 beds, some with their own shower and toilet, others with showers and bathrooms in the hallway.

Ski-RaupeDirectly in the center of Sterzing is the luxuriously furnished Goldene Kreuz (golden cross). Nearly every double and triple bed room has its own shower and bathroom. In the mornings, we will select our meals from the breakfast buffet table, and in the evenings, we can take our pick from any of the sumptuous Southern Tyrolian specialities. Here we will also have our own living room, dining room and bar.

Across the street is the Lilie, a quaint 850-year-old inn with a bacon smoke-house, a lounge, and a separate dining room for our group. This is where most of our ABeR parties take place. We'll be sleeping in 3-5 bed rooms, all equipped with central heating and hot water. Our innkeepers, Anni and Willi, will take good care of us, serving continental breakfasts in the morning, and hearty Austrian fare for dinner. Willi always looks forward to the yearly visits from the ABeR gang and makes a special effort to roll out the red carpet for us Put it all together, and you have a ski vacation that you'll remember for a long time.
